Chirps the Cricket - Free No Sew Crochet Pattern

Happy Wednesday! I hope your summer is going well so far. We are planning a couple small trips here and there, but nothing too big this year. I have had a vision for a cricket since January. He was going to be a superhero at one point. I wasn’t happy with the lightening bolt, so I scratched that idea for now. The lightening bolt will be coming soon as a pattern on its own, but in the meantime, I'd like to finally introduce Chirps the Cricket!!! He is such a fun pattern and works up pretty quick making this a perfect market prep plushie. This is a no sew pattern meaning the legs, wings, arms and antennae are attached and crocheted as you go.

Pin it for later!

Notes
This is an intermediate pattern, some amigurumi experience would be helpful. However, reach out with any questions or concerns. Please read through the entire pattern before beginning. This pattern is written in US terminology. It is made in continuous rounds. Do not ch 1 or sl st at the end of each round unless instructed to do so. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round. Stitch count is in ( ) at the end of each round. Make sure your count is correct before moving to the next round. There are two options included. Option 1 is a no sew pattern where the legs, wings, arms and antennae are attached as you crochet the body & head. The wings and antennae will be attached separately for Option 2. (Tips for crocheting amigurumi with plush yarn)

Ready?! Let’s get started!

Arms
With a 4mm hook and Color A {make 2}
Rnd 1: sc 6 in mc (6 sts)
Rnd 2-8: sc in each st (6 sts) ••7 rnds••

Do not stuff. F/O. I like to leave the arms open, but you can pinch the opening & add 3 sc across to close if you prefer. The arms will be joined as you crochet the body. Leave a few inches for the tail. (picture 1)

Legs
With a 4mm hook and Color A {make 2}
Rnd 1: sc 10 in mc (10)
Rnd 2: sc, [dec] x 4, sc (6 sts)
Rnd 3-12: sc in each st (6 sts) •• 10 rnds ••

Do not stuff. F/O. I like to leave the top open for the legs, but you can pinch the opening and add 3 sc across to close if you prefer. The legs will be joined as you crochet the body. Leave a few inches for the tail (picture 2). **If you are adding the bend in the knee, leave a long tail. Pinch the bottom to shape the feet. (picture 3)

**OPTIONAL: If you choose to bend the knee, fold the leg where you would like to add the knee bend. Using the yarn tail, go through the inside of the leg and come out around rnd 8 and then through rnd 6. Sew the bend going back and forth through both layers of the leg. (picture 4) This step can wait until after rnd 9 of the body if you prefer. (pictures 4-7 below)

Body - No Sew Option 1
With a 4mm hook and Color A
Starting at the bottom and working up to the head. If you use safety eyes, insert them between rnds 21-22. Placement could vary depending on the size eyes you use. Stuff as you go. The legs and arms will be attached as you crochet the body. The wings and antennae will be crocheted as you go. This is a no sew pattern. It is very important to line up all the pieces. Due to tension, stuffing and the type of yarn used, exact placement may vary slightly. Adjust st marker as needed. If you would prefer to sew the wings & antennae on separately, see Option 2 below.

Rnd 1:
sc 4 in mc (4 sts)
Rnd 2: sc in each st (4 sts)

Rnd 7: [5 sc, inc] x 2 (14 sts)
Rnd 8: [6 sc, inc] x 2 (16 sts)

**The legs will be attached in the next rnd. The legs should hang down in front of the body with the working rnd at the top. Tie the yarn ends from the legs together loosely. The st marker should be on the back of the body. Make sure that the legs are facing forward.

Rnd 9: 2 sc, attach the first leg with 3 sc through the leg and body, 6 sc, attach the second leg with 3 sc through the leg and body, 2 sc (16 sts) (pictures 8-10)
Rnd 10: [sc, inc] x 8 (24 sts)
Rnd 11-14: sc in each st (24 sts) ••4 rnds••

**The arms will be attached in the next rnd. The arms should hang down in front of the body with the working rnd at the top. Tie the yarn ends from the arms together loosely. They should be lined up with the legs. Adjust the st marker if needed.

Rnd 15: 6 sc, attach the first arm with 3 sc through the arm and body, 7 sc, attach the second arm with 3 sc through the arm and body, 5 sc (24 sts) (picture 11)

**The wings will be added in the FLO sts of the next rnd over the first 4 sts. They should be centered across the back. I moved my st marker to the right one st and took out the one st. Adjust your st marker if needed.

Rnd 16: *(sc in the FLO of the first st and ch 14. Place the st marker in the BLO of this st. Sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook. Work the following in the remaining ch sts. 2 sc, 3 hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc. Work 1 sc in the FLO of the next st) repeat for the 2nd wing. A diagram is included below. (pictures 12-14) Rnd 16 continues after diagram.

**The chest will be shaped with dec sts centered in the front of the body for rnds 16-17. Adjust sts as necessary.

Rnd 16 continued: 4 sc, [dec] x 6, 4 sc (18 sts - do not count ch sts or sl sts)
Rnd 17: Work the first 4 sc sts in the BLO of each st, 3 sc, [dec] x 4, 3 sc (14 sts) (picture 15)

**Lightly stuff the tail so it can bend when sitting. Stuff the remainder of the body firm, but don't over stuff. Starting the head next. The face will be shaped with inc and dec sts centered in the front for rnds 18-20. Adjust st marker as necessary.

Rnd 18: 5 sc, [inc] x 7, 2 sc (21 sts)
Rnd 19: 11 sc, [inc] x 4, 6 sc (25 sts)

**The nose will be shaped in the front center of the face in rnd 20. Adjust st marker if needed.

Rnd 20: 15 sc, insert hook into next st, yarn over and draw yarn through pulling up a loop, skip the next st, insert hook from the inside of the st (from back to front), yarn over and draw yarn through, yarn over again and complete the st (picture 16; step by step pictures below). 7 sc (23 sts)

Rnd 24: [3 sc, dec] x 4, 3 sc (19 sts)

**If you are using safety eyes, you can insert them between rnds 21-22. Placement will vary based on different yarn weights and size of safety eyes. Stuff. The antennae will be made in the next rnd. Do not cut yarn when changing colors. Drop yarn and pick it back up loosely for second antennae. Make sure the antennae are lined up with the arms. Adjust st marker as needed.

Rnd 26: [sc, dec] x 2, sc. Change to Color B, sc and ch 5, sc 3 in the second ch from hook, sl st in each ch, change to Color A in the same st.

[Dec] x 3, change to Color B, sc and ch 5, sc 3 in the second ch from hook, sl st in each ch, change to Color A in the same st.

Dec, sc. (12 sts - not including antennae sts)

**Cut Color B yarn and tie ends together. Stuff.

Rnd 27: dec x 6 (6 sts)

Stuff. Sl st into the next st to F/O. Weave tail through the FLO of the remaining 6 sts, pull to close. (pictures 17-19)

Assembly
•
Use pins as a placeholder for the eyes. The eyes will be sewn over rnds 21-22 with about 4 sts between. Using black worsted weight yarn, wrap around rnds 21- 22 approximately 4 times. Using white worsted weight yarn, go outside of the eye over rnd 21 only. Then, add white to the center top part of the eye about half way through rnd 22. Pull snug, but not too tight.
• Use pins as a placeholder for the mouth. The mouth will be sewn over rnd 19 with about 2-3 sts between.
