Rug Bug Huggie - Free Crochet Pattern

Happy Tuesday Friends! I have a really fun pattern to share today. The Rug Bug Huggie is a cuddly snuggler, crocheted with plush yarn on the top and faux fur yarn on the bottom part. The body is left unstuffed and the antennae, arms, and wings are all attached as you go. There is another pattern releasing with the huggie (available as a pdf only on Etsy and Ravelry), Tilly the Rug Bug, which is a bug that fits snug in a “rug bag.” Every night I tell my boys to sleep as snug as a bug in a rug. So, my boys are the inspiration behind the Rug Bug Huggie and Tilly the Rug Bug. My oldest asked me to add the strap/handle to the rug bag so he could carry the bug around with other small toys.

Pin for Later!

Notes:
This is an advanced beginner pattern, some amigurumi experience would be helpful. However, reach out with any questions or concerns. Please read through the entire pattern before starting your design. This pattern is written in US terminology. It is made in continuous rounds. Do not ch1 or sl st at the end of each round unless instructed to do so. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round. Stitch count is in ( ) at the end of each row. Make sure your count is correct before moving to the next round. The bug is considered to be a low sew pattern, the antennae, wings, and arms are attached as you go. The huggie blanket portion is added with a few sts.

F/O and leave a tail a few inches long.

Rnd 1: sc 8 in mc (8 sts)
Rnd 2: inc x 8 (16 sts)

**The antennae will be added in the next rnd. Make sure the antennae are on the correct side of the head. They should hang upside down in front of the head with the working round at the top. Tie the tails from the antennae together to secure once they are attached.

Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x 2, sc, attach first antennae with 2 sc through the antennae & head in the same st (this is an inc st) (picture 4), [sc, inc] x 2, attach second antennae with 2 sc through the antennae & head (same st), sc, [sc, inc] x 2 (24 sts) (picture 5)

Tie tails from arms and wings together and hide inside the head. Stuff the head, but don't stuff too firm. (picture 8)

We will be closing the head with a seam to attach to the huggie portion.

Rnd 16: ch 1, pinch the opening closed horizontally to see where your sts will go. (picture 8) Place 5 sc across the front and back of the head to close. 3 sts at each arm will remain unworked. F/O. (5 sts) (picture 9-11)

Huggie Blanket
9mm Hook and Color C
Faux fur yarn can be a little tricky to work with. Once you get past the first few rnds, it gets easier. Use loose tension. Trust the process, you got this! Starting at the bottom and working up.

Rnd 1: 8 hdc in mc (8 sts)
Rnd 2: hdc inc x 8 (16 sts)
Rnd 3: [hdc, hdc inc] x 8 (24 sts)
Rnd 4-8: hdc in each st (24 sts) ••5 rnds••
Rnd 9: [hdc, hdc dec] x 8 (16 sts)
Rnd 10: [hdc dec, hdc] x 4, hdc dec, hdc dec (10 sts)

**Change to Color A

Rnd 11-12:
hdc in each st (10 sts) ••2 rnds•• (picture 12)

F/O and leave a long tail for attaching to the head. Hold the head upside down and sandwich the blanket part around the seam created on rnd 16 of the head. Line the stitches up and sew back and forth between the stitches to attach. (pictures 13-14) The seam on the head should be hidden inside the blanket part. (picture 15)

Assembly
Sew the eyes over rnd 7 with about 4 sts between. (pictures 16-24)
